MOTION SPECIFIC RELEASE
An Integrated Approach to Musculoskeletal Care
What is Motion Specific Release (MSR)?
Motion Specific Release (MSR), developed by Dr. Brian Abelson, is an integrated approach to musculoskeletal assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation.
MSR brings together orthopedic and neurological examination, manual and fascial techniques, joint mobilization and manipulation, neurodynamic procedures, acupuncture, and exercise-based rehabilitation.
Rather than focusing on a single technique or isolated structure, MSR encourages practitioners to consider how joints, muscles, fascia, nerves, and movement patterns may interact within the kinetic chain.
MSR is designed as a practical clinical framework that practitioners can integrate with their existing knowledge, techniques, and scope of practice.
How is MSR Different?
MSR emphasizes clinical reasoning. Examination findings help guide the selection of treatment and rehabilitation strategies rather than applying the same procedures to every patient with a particular diagnosis.
The system combines hands-on clinical skills with functional rehabilitation, recognizing that manual therapy is only one component of musculoskeletal care. Exercise, movement, patient education, reassessment, and referral when appropriate are integral to the approach.
MSR continues to evolve as research and clinical understanding advance, providing practitioners with an evidence-informed framework for assessing complex musculoskeletal presentations and developing individualized management strategies.
