What Is a Bunion? A bunion, medically known as hallux valgus, is a progressive change in the alignment of the big toe and the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint at its base. As the big toe gradually angles toward the second toe, the first metatarsal shifts in the opposite direction, creating the characteristic bump along the inside of the foot. But a bunion is more than just a bump. It reflects changes in the alignment and mechanics of the joint and surrounding structures.
