Few phrases on an imaging report sound more unsettling than degenerative disc disease. The name can suggest that the spine is damaged and destined to deteriorate. In reality, it describes changes in the spinal discs that become increasingly common with age and are often found in people who have no pain at all.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and one of the most common joint conditions worldwide. It involves gradual changes throughout the joint, including the cartilage, bone, synovium, ligaments, and surrounding tissues. Cartilage provides a smooth, low-friction surface that helps joints move efficiently.

Osteoarthritis does not necessarily mean that pain and loss of function will continually worsen. There is often much that can be done to manage symptoms, maintain mobility, and keep the hands active.
